Anthropology 和 Archaeology

Students of 考古 和 anthropology at 罕布什尔学院 engage in a study of the dimensions of humanity.

Through courses in physical 和 cultural anthropology, students learn anthropological models 和 methodology, which provide the groundwork for the pursuit of informed, integrative independent research.

By combining coursework in the 自然科学社会科学, anthropology students are exposed to field work 和 laboratory 分析.

Sex, Death, 和 Teeth: Life Stories Recorded in Teeth

In this project-focused course we will research how teeth provide insights into health, 营养, 饮食, 和起源. Teeth develop in utero 和 during early life, 和 then are nearly inert. Because teeth grow somewhat like trees (teeth also have growth rings), one can use teeth as windows onto past lifetimes 和 geological times. We will learn how to read the record of 营养 和 health from tooth size, shape, 和 chemistry. Examples of h和s-on projects include gender differences in prenatal 营养 among the Maya, lead pollution in contemporary Egypt 和 Mexico, 和 the geographic origin of enslaved Africans. This course is particularly recommended for students with interests in anthropology, 考古, 公共卫生, 和营养.

Five College Collaboration

The study of anthropology is greatly enriched by the presence of a large 和 varied range of scholars across Five College consortium who meet regularly, 分享他们的研究成果, 和 lecture in each other's classes.

As part of a wider collaborative effort to exp和 the opportunities for undergraduate study 和 field work in medical anthropology 和 related areas, the anthropologists helped to develop a Five College Certificate Program in Culture, Health, 和 Science.

A major collaboration is a day-long Five College symposium each year in which undergraduates present their research to the faculty 和 to their peers at all the campuses.

领域的研究

Through the University of Massachusetts Amherst's department of anthropology, Five College students are able to participate in local archaeological digs each summer or enroll in the field program in European studies. The field studies training program works on the principle of small group collaborative learning. Participants move through a three-semester course sequence as a group, sharing their ideas 和 experiences with each other. 以这种方式, participants learn from each other 和 the faculty instructor who guides them through the process from beginning to end.

Participants are free to choose the research site 和 topic that most suits their interests. Students develop these ideas into full-fledged research projects—taking the project through the various stages of design, 数据收集, 分析, 和报告/出版. The idea is to experience the challenge of individual field research with the advantage of close guidance 和 support.

Five College Certificate 项目

Dependent upon individual academic focus, concentrators at Hampshire in anthropology or 考古 may also qualify for the Five College Certificate 项目 in Culture, Health, 和 Science, 美洲原住民研究, 非洲研究, or 拉丁美洲研究.
